Losing a player the caliber of LeBron James, who had been the leader of the Los Angeles Lakers for eight years, makes for a lot of changes. But one that is very intriguing is what it means for his son Bronny James, who remained with the team and is now entering his third NBA season.
Bronny has shown plenty of growth in his career, but also has always had his father as his teammate since joining the league. Now entering his first training camp without him by his side, Bronny is ready for whatever this season will bring.
“Feels like he’s not here,” Bronny said at Lakers Media Day. “I don’t really have an opinion on that. You know it’s my Dad, I’ve spent 22 years almost with him so yea, just another experience I’m gonna be a part of and I’m excited, how it’s gonna feel during the season too so looking forward to it.”
There are many who believe that Bronny only made it to the NBA and was drafted by the Lakers because of his father. Now, Bronny is able to focus on his own path and make his own name and he is looking forward to that.
“He’s got his own path and I got my own,” Bronny said. “So he knows that I want to make a name for myself and continue my career and keep growing as a player. And he knows that I want to focus on that. So he decides to do that, I’m happy for him and excited to see where their season goes.”
One thing Bronny is excited about though is facing off with LeBron on Christmas Day.
“Wasn’t really much to be honest with you. I mean, he’s got his own path and I’ve got my own so he knows that I want to make a name for myself and want to continue my career and keep growing as a player,” Bronny added. “He knows that I wanna focus on that, and he decided to do that. Happy for him and excited to where their season goes and I’m excited to see him on Christmas. Excited to play against him on Christmas, that’s gonna be good.”
LeBron will make his return to Crypto.com Arena on Christmas Day when the Lakers host the Philadelphia 76ers in what is one of the most anticipated NBA games of the season. Of course, Bronny and LeBron made history by becoming the first father-son duo to suit up together and now they could make more history by being the first to face each other as well.
But for Bronny, this year will be about establishing himself as his own player. He will be battling for a rotation spot on this new-look Lakers roster and if he can turn himself into a valuable role player for this team, the talk about his father getting him to the league can finally begin to dissipate.
