Jo Adell’s walk-off single in the 10th inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 7–6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night at Angel Stadium, completing another Freeway Series victory and tightening the race atop the National League West. The Dodgers entered the game as -145 favorites but suffered their third straight loss, falling into a first-place tie with the San Diego Padres after San Diego’s win over San Francisco.
The game featured multiple dramatic turns, from Shohei Ohtani lining into a triple play in the sixth inning. The play began when Angels shortstop Zach Neto made a diving catch on Ohtani’s liner up the middle, stepped on second base to double off Miguel Rojas, and fired to first to catch Dalton Rushing for the third out. It was the eighth triple play in franchise history for the Angels.
Ohtani redeemed himself in the ninth, launching a cutter from Kenley Jansen over the wall in right for his NL-leading 43rd home run, giving the Dodgers a 6–5 lead. The blast, which came off the bat at 114.8 mph, also extended Ohtani’s hitting streak to 11 games and marked his fourth consecutive game with a home run. He moved past Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber for the league lead in homers, with five coming over his last six games.
The Angels quickly answered in the bottom of the ninth when Luis Rengifo singled and eventually scored on Nolan Schanuel’s sacrifice fly to tie the game. Ben Casparius struck out Taylor Ward with the bases loaded to send the contest to extra innings.
In the 10th, Connor Brogdon (3–1) kept the Dodgers off the scoreboard, setting the stage for the winning rally. Christian Moore laid down a bunt single to advance the automatic runner Ward to third, and Adell followed with a high chopper over the drawn-in infield for the game-winning RBI.
Ward contributed earlier with his 28th home run, driving in two runs for the Angels and rushing hit his second homer of the season for the Dodgers, while the defending World Series champions fell to 0–5 against the Angels this year. The loss marked the first time since June 13 that the Dodgers were not alone atop the NL West standings.
Jansen’s blown save ended a streak of 21 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run, the longest of his career. The Dodgers’ bullpen, which has been relied upon heavily recently, could not hold the late lead despite strong starting pitching early in the game.
The teams will conclude the series on Wednesday night. Ohtani (0–0, 2.37 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Dodgers in his return to Angel Stadium as a pitcher, facing Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (6–8, 4.63 ERA). Los Angeles will be looking to avoid a season sweep by the Angels, while the home team aims to extend its dominance in the crosstown rivalry.
