The Los Angeles Angels secured a 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon at Angel Stadium, completing a three-game sweep in a matchup marked by momentum swings, timely hitting, and a heated ejection. Jo Adell’s two-run homer capped a pivotal sixth inning rally that allowed the Angels to overcome a strong offensive performance by Oakland’s Brent Rooker, who homered twice in a losing effort.
Rooker accounted for much of the Athletics’ scoring, finishing the game with four hits, including two home runs and a double. He scored three times and drove in three runs, raising his season home run total to 15. Despite his standout performance, the Athletics could not hold off a sixth-inning surge by Los Angeles that changed the course of the game.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Angels responded with six runs in an inning that featured a mix of patience and power. The inning began with Athletics starter JP Sears being relieved after recording one out. His replacement, Grant Holman, walked Mike Trout on a 3-2 pitch that he believed was a strike. Holman then hit Taylor Ward with a pitch to force in a run before Jorge Soler delivered a two-run single that slipped past the Athletics’ infielders. The sequence resulted in a tie game and led to Sears being ejected from the dugout after a heated outburst at the umpiring crew.
Travis d’Arnaud put the Angels ahead with a sacrifice fly, and Adell followed with his 13th home run of the season to extend the lead to 6-3. It marked Adell’s sixth home run in his last nine games and continued his recent stretch of power hitting.
Rooker answered in the top of the seventh with his second home run, a two-run shot that trimmed the deficit to 6-5. However, the Athletics could not rally further against the Angels’ bullpen. Starter Kyle Hendricks earned the win for Los Angeles, improving to 4-6 on the season after throwing six innings and allowing three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits. Reid Detmers pitched a flawless ninth inning to record his second save of the year.
The loss extended a difficult stretch for the Athletics, who have dropped 23 of their last 27 games. Oakland was again without Jacob Wilson, the team’s leading hitter with a .366 average, who missed his second consecutive game due to a hamstring injury.
The sweep marked the first time the Angels have completed a home sweep since a series against Oakland in June 2024. The Angels improved their standing in the American League to build on recent success.
Looking ahead, the Athletics will send Luis Severino (1-6, 4.77 ERA) to the mound Friday against Cole Ragans (2-3, 5.18 ERA) when they begin a new series. Meanwhile, the Angels will travel to Baltimore, where Jack Kochanowicz (3-7, 5.61 ERA) is scheduled to face off against Charlie Morton (2-7, 6.59 ERA).
Los Angeles entered the series finale as modest favorites with betting odds around -135, while the over/under for total runs closed at 8.5. The high-scoring sixth inning helped the total comfortably exceed that line.
