After getting trounced by the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Rams look to regroup when they host the San Francisco 49ers at SoFi Stadium in Week 3.
The Rams are looking for their first win of the season while the 49ers enter the matchup at 1-1. Both teams have been bitten by the injury bug and will be significantly shorthanded.
For the Rams, they are obviously without Cooper Kupp, who will miss a few weeks due to an ankle injury. He fortunately wasn’t placed on injured reserve, but his absence leaves the wide receiver corps thin.
Davis Allen has also been ruled out, while Joshua Karty, Cobie Durant and Bobby Brown III are listed as questionable. One bit of good news is that Alaric Jackson is making his season debut after serving a two-game suspension.
The 49ers will be missing some key players as well, with Deebo Samuel ruled out. George Kittle is also listed as doubtful to play, while Nick Bosa is questionable.
Puka Nacua and Christian McCaffrey are among the other stars on IR who won’t play in Sunday’s game.
The Rams have lost nine of their last 10 regular-season games against the 49ers dating back to the 2018 season. They won their Week 18 matchup last year, but both teams rested most of their starters.
The Rams are looking to avoid their first 0-3 start since the 2011 season, which saw them finish 2-14 under then-head coach Steve Spagnuolo.
Rams’ keys to victory
Who steps up at WR?
With Kupp and Nacua sidelined, the Rams will be relying on a receiving corps that now includes Demarcus Robinson, Tyler Johnson, Tutu Atwell and rookie Jordan Whittington.
“Those guys did a nice job today when they got their opportunities in the game to step in and make some plays,” Matthew Stafford said of the Rams wide receivers.
“I thought Demarcus Robinson made some nice plays, I thought Tutu made some good plays, J-Whitt made some plays, TJ, so continue to grow with those guys, try to help them out as much as I possibly can, give them good passes to catch and let those guys do their thing.
“I’ve got a ton of trust in them. They’ve done a great job all through OTAs, training camp, all that kind of stuff. And have some pass-game history with some of those guys.”
Kamren Kinchens stepping in for John Johnson III
With John Johnson III going on IR, the Rams are planning to elevate rookie Kamren Kinchens to a starting role in his absence.
Kinchens hasn’t played much this season but he had a solid career in college and will be looking to make an immediate impact.
