NHL’s Three Stars of the Month for January

USATSI_8339341_154224518_lowresThe NHL announced their ‘Three Stars‘ for the month of January yesterday. It was an abbreviated month, with the season starting on January 19th, but there was enough time for several players to put up some impressive numbers.

FIRST STAR – Craig Anderson, Ottawa Senators

Craig Anderson went undefeated for the Senators in January. He finished the month with a 5-0-1 record, with an impressive .967 save percentage and 0.99 goals against average. There was only one game in which he allowed two or more goals. He shutout the Panthers on January 21st for his 20th career shutout.

SECOND STAR – Patrick Marleau, San Jose Sharks

Patrick Marleau finished the month second in league scoring with 14 points. He led the league in goals with nine. He started the season with four consecutive multi-goal games, the second player in NHL history to do that. He scored a goal in the Sharks first five games. Marleau scored 5 power-play goals, and three of his nine goals were game-winners.

THIRD STAR – Thomas Vanek, Buffalo Sabres

Thomas Vanek led the league in scoring for January. He scored six goals and added nine assists for 15 points. Vanek put together two, five point games. In their season opener against the Flyers on Jan. 20th, he scored two and added three assists. He finished the month with a three goal, two assist performance against the Bruins. He was the first player since Mario Lemieux in 1992-93 to record two, five point games in the first seven games of a season.
