The NHL has named its “Three Stars” of the week for the week ending February 3rd, as well as its “rookie of the month” for January.
Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres had another solid week, and now sits a top in the scoring race. In four games last week, Vanek recorded five goals and added five assists. He had a five point night against the Bruins, three goals and two assists. It was his second, five point night of the season.
Chris Kunitz of the Pittsburgh Penguins was the NHL’s second star of the week. In four games, he recorded five goals and three assists for eight points. He had two game winning goals last week. Against the Capitals on Sunday, Kunitz had his first four goal game of his career.
Roberto Luongo may have taken over the number one role in Vancouver after posting a 2-0-1 recorded with a 0.95 goals against average and a .963 save percentage. Last Wednesday he earned his 61st career shutout by blanking the Colorado Avalanche 3-0.
ROOKIE OF THE MONTH
Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues was named the NHL rookie of the month for January. The Blue right winger led all rookies in scoring with five goals and four assists for nine points in seven games. He failed to register a point in only one game in January. Tarasenko beat out rookies: Cory Conacher (TB), Nail Yakupov (EDM), Justin Schultz (EDM) and Alex Galchenyuk (Mon).
Tarasenko’s first NHL goal was against the Detroit Red Wings on January 19th in his first NHL game.
Tarasenko’s second career goal came in his first NHL game, and it shows the how talented the 21-year old is.
