The Arizona Diamondbacks have seen their NL West lead shrink to just 2.5 games, and in the process, they’ve lost several players to the disabled list.
Starters Brandon McCarthy, Trevor Cahill and Daniel Hudson have all missed time this year and the Diamondbacks have called the Milwaukee Brewers about one starter in particular.
According to Jon Morosi of FoxSports.com, the Diamondbacks and Brewers were discussing a rather large trade:
“The Diamondbacks and Brewers are in the midst of ongoing discussions about starter Yovani Gallardo and relievers John Axford, Jim Henderson, and Francisco Rodriguez, the sources said.”
Gallardo would be a welcome addition to the Diamondbacks rotation as starter Patrick Corbin has a sparkling 9-1 record and has kept the team afloat through all their injuries.
It doesn’t sound like the DBacks would acquire all three relievers, but they could use at least one since closer J.J. Putz has been injured throughout the season.
So far this year, Gallardo is 6-8 with a 4.78 ERA, but has fared decently well against other NL West opponents this season. Rodriguez, Henderson and Axford have all had their turn in the closer’s spot with the Brewers, but adding one of the trio would go a long way for the DBacks.
It’s unknown what the Brewers would receive in the deal, but rookie starter Tyler Skaggs has been brought up and could be auditioning for the Brew Crew.
In three starts this season, Skaggs is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA and with the Brewers out of contention, he could be a nice piece in their rebuilding project.
With other NL West teams looking for
pitching, it’s no surprise the Diamondbacks have entered the market as they’ve seen their lead shrink in the past month.
