Major league baseball announced today that Braves outfielder Justin Upton and Orioles outfielder Chris Davis were named players of the month for April.

The MLB PR department announced the decision today:

In his first season in Atlanta, Upton is hitting .299 with 12 home runs and 19 RBI’s while leading the Braves to a 17-9 April record. Last season, Upton was hampered with a thumb injury and didn’t produce like the Diamondbacks expected him to.

He hit .280 with only 17 home runs and 67 RBI’s in 150 games, but clashed with Diamondbacks management and manager Kirk Gibson. Playing in Atlanta with his brother B.J. has relaxed Upton at the plate and allowed for him to have a spectacular first month of the season.

Davis is in third season with the Orioles, but has finally tapped into his potential. Through the first month, Davis hit .348 with nine home runs and 28 RBI’s while having an OPS of 1.141.

While always having the power, Davis struggled with his strikeout rate as he had 169 K’s in 562 plate appearances last season. With his power in the middle of the lineup, the Orioles are off to another great start at 16-12 and sit third in the AL East.

Both Upton and Davis are coming into their own this season and are primed to continue their success throughout the season. While also winning player of the month, Davis received AL player of the week honors his performance during the first week of the season.
